Can I set permissions to 777?

YES you can BUT it is not recommended to change your permissions to 777 as other users on the server as well as anyone who may find a security hole in their scripts can write to that location. This is one of the most common ways hackers get in to websites and deface them or upload malicious scripts to a website. We strongly recommend that you stick to 755 for folders and 644 for files.
